Custom Creation
Custom Creation
A five step process

Inspiration

Every custom-made piece of jewelry starts with an idea. Whether it is a picture of a ring you saw online, a reproduction of something you remember your grandmother wearing, or simply a cool idea that popped into your head, true custom jewelry all starts here. Once we have an idea, we have a conversation about design structures, colors and measurements. From this conversation we can produce a sketch of the idea. That allows us to provide a price quote and move on to the next step of the process.

Computer-Aided Design

Computer-Aided Design

Most of the custom jewelry we make today is built using a complex computer program. Based on a rough sketch and a discussion of the details, our CAD technician can create the design in digital form. The program is then able to produce a realistic picture of what the finished piece will look like. This is called a rendering. The rendering is then emailed to the customer for approval before moving on to step 3.

3-D Printing

After the custom piece has been digitally designed and the renderings have been approved by the customer, a plastic version of the ring is grown on our 3-D printer. This allows the customer to see and feel what the finish product will be like once it is produced in a precious metal. The plastic model is the exact size and shape that was discussed in the original conversation of the design.

Casting

Casting

After the 3-D model has been approved, the project proceeds to the casting process. A liquid investment is poured over the plastic pattern, incasing it inside a steel casting tube. Once hardened, the mold is placed into a furnace to slowly heat up and burn out the plastic pattern. This process leaves a hollow cavity where the 3-D pattern used to be. Using a centrifugal casting machine, the precious metal is melted into its liquid form and forced into the hollow cavity. The casting tube is then quenched in cold water and the investment is removed. The piece of jewelry is now a raw casting, ready to be shaped and polished into a finished piece.

Completion

After the raw casting has been produced, a skilled jeweler completes the final steps of the custom making process. The raw casting must be polished smooth, then any diamonds or gemstones must be mounted into the piece. A final polishing, using precious metal rouge, is used to bring the piece to a bright high-shined finish. After several hours of effort, a custom crafted piece of jewelry is ready to be presented to the customer.
